in which to register his/her spouse.
May 24 (morning)
Tour de meio dia Coimbra
Dominating the city raises the vast group of buildings of the
old University, the 2nd oldest in the world, dating from 1292.
Here we will visit the 18th century Library, one of the most
important sections of the University, which walls are covered
with shelves with beautiful woodcarving and the St. Michael
Chapel, an excellent example of the Manuelin art style. Nearby,
we can find the Old Cathedral built in 1160, in Romanic style,
with the magnificent cloister in Gothic style. The visit ends
in the Santa Clara-a-Nova Monastery, located in the hill that
dominates the southern bank of the Mondego River. Construction
works started in 1649 but they were only concluded 50 years
after and they were intended to replace the Santa Clara-a-Velha
Monastery due to the permanent rise of the river waters that
flooded all the area.
May 24 (afternoon)
Half-day tour to Luso and
Bussaco
When in the Bussaco Mountain, we can see the 17th century Convent
that once belonged to a religious congregation (Ordem das Carmelitas
Descalças), of which there is only left the church and
the private rooms. Along the mountain we will pass by several
little chapels dating back to the 17th century. We will also
visit the Grand Bussaco Hotel, a magnificent building projected
by the architect Manini, in the end of the 19th century, in
neo-Manuelin style. We will then continue to Luso and visit
its Therms. Return to Coimbra.
