The Porvoo
Group is an international cooperative network whose primary goal
is to promote a trans-national, interoperable electronic identity,
based on PKI technology (Public Key Infrastructure) and electronic
ID cards , in order to help ensure secure public and private sector
e-transactions in Europe.
As its name suggests, the Porvoo Group was established in the
Finnish city of Porvoo in April 2002.
The founding meeting took place during the international conference
held in conjunction with the Public Identity Project of the Smart
Card Charter operating under the eEurope 2002 programme.
The 11th Porvoo Group Conference, hosted by the Agency for Public
Services Modernization, will be held during Portugal’s EU
Presidency, on the 24th and 25th of May 2007, in Coimbra, one
of the most historic cities of Portugal, with strong associations
to the learning environment.
The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is one of the
oldest in Europe, being an international reference in terms
of research in several knowledge fields. The 11th Porvoo Group
conference will take place in the Auditorium of Faculty of Sciences
and Technology of the University of Coimbra, one of the eight
Faculties in the campus.
The topics of this conference will be the evolution of e-government
in Portugal, presentation of pioneering
Portuguese public projects, current status of electronic identity
in Europe and worldwide and
prospects for the future.
