University of Coimbra forms an heterogeneous architectural ensemble, from which stands the Estado Novo buildings and, above all, the the School Yard (Paço das Escolas), dominated by the famous University Tower.
You will be able to (re)dicover the Sala dos Capelos, the main room of the
University; the magnificent Biblioteca Joanina (Library) – of remarkable
architecture dating from the 18th centuty, it houses around 200 000 books;
Cárcere (Prision), which was used between 1593 and 1773; the University
Tower - constructed between 1728 and 1733, is considered the ”mother”
of all European University towers and it houses, in addition to the clocks,
the bells that regulate the Univerity functions; and, finally, the Chapel
of St. Michael. After the visit, a walk through picturesque streets will lead you to the Town Hall, where dinner will take place.
